Congratulations to Dr Tim Patterson on his appointment to Associate Professor.

Tim joined the University as a researcher in 2005 after spending the previous 10 years working in the private sector as a consultant specialising in the investigation and remediation of contaminated land.

In 2008, Tim worked closely with his colleague Professor Sandra Esteves and the Welsh Government to initiate the formation of the Wales Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion.

The Centre, led by Professor Esteves, was formed to assist companies involved in the development of the emerging anaerobic digestion and biogas sectors, has led to many other collaborative research opportunities including projects funded by IUK, BBSRC and BEIS.

In 2013 Tim completed his PhD on the life cycle analysis of renewable gases for vehicle fuel use, which was undertaken on a part time basis whilst continuing to develop and deliver projects in SERC.

During 2015/16 he worked closely with Prof Sandra Esteves to secure SMART Circle - the first ERDF / SMART Expertise project in Wales. Smart Circle is a £1 million collaborative industrial research project (matched with £1 million of contributions from eight industrial partners) to explore how innovative bioprocesses can be used to improve the operational and resource efficiency of a range of industrial operations.

Tim is also working with Professor Sandra Esteves and Dr Savvas Savvas to develop industrial biotech processes that can utilise greenhouse gases and renewable hydrogen to produce fuels, platform chemicals, and allow the storage of renewable energy.

Research in the area is being funded through SMART Circle in collaboration with Tata Steel Europe, and through a BEIS funded project in collaboration with NiTech Solutions Ltd and BPE Design and Support Ltd.
